Sergio Ruffato’s Metal Sketches series is a transcription of gestural drawings into metal sculptures. Through the study of dancers and figures in motion the artist has developed his own language of movement at first by sketching on paper and then in the manipulation of metal. The idea of using steel as a drawing line came from the understanding of metal forging techniques, which enable the sculptor to work with a malleable material when the steel is red hot and end up with a sturdy and free standing structure as it cools down. This process has led to a whole body of work that celebrates the transcendence of movement in a liberated style; like a ribbon floating in the wind that would have taken the shape of a body by chance. In quest of the sun rays that weave themselves into the landscapes of southern France, Sergio found his way of forging brass to explore the different representations of light and flickering reflections on water. This work flow now enables him to forge at a larger scale and display his sculptures directly in the landscapes that inspired their creation.
Sergio is a Franco-American artist born and raised in Aix en Provence, France. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012 with a nomination for the International Sculpture Center Outstanding Student Achievement Award. He now spends part of the year working in a studio run by his family in Marseille, France and the other part he spends traveling and exhibiting his artwork around the USA. This year he was selected to exhibit in the National Salon of Beaux Arts at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris and invited to display his sculptures at the Biennale of the National Union for Sculptors in Lyon. He also completed his first public art commission, a 10 feet tall brass vase titled Amphora installed in the city of Marseille. This was a major stepping stone in his artist journey and confirms his path as an ambassador of the arts between France and the United States.
