Sergio Ruffato's exploration of movement stems from his observation of dancers and bodies in motion. In attending figure drawing sessions, where the model constantly moves through the space rather than remaining still to pose for the viewer; he developed a series of gestural sketches conveying the ephemeral sensation of movement rather than the stillness of form. In these two-dimensional studies, the simplicity of energetic lines evokes the essence of life in motion. These strokes are then translated into the sculptural medium through metalwork as the artist forges hot steel; shaping it with the malleability of the heated material, and letting it solidify into a sturdy structure.
Ruffato’s sculptures, often created from a single continuous piece of metal, encapsulate a singular, unbroken flow of energy. As the metal cools, it locks into a form that seems to have materialized from the movement itself—fluid, untethered, yet definitively present. The result is an artistic expression of movement that seems to transcend time. Each piece resembling a ribbon caught in a moment of flight, frozen in metal but vibrating with a sense of liberation.
In quest of the fleeting sun rays that are interlaced into the landscapes of southern France, Ruffato sought to translate the intangible qualities of light into tangible forms. The sculptor's passion for developing metalworking processes has led him to weave metal into solar designs that evoke traditional basketry culture. He has created an ongoing series of free-standing sculptures that capture the shifting reflections of light on water. Throughout the years his technique has evolved from single strands of metal to bigger and more complex welded compositions. His body of work has also grown into a variety of subjects including fauna and flora. Sculptures that once existed in the studio are now poised to interact with the very landscapes that inspired their creation; unfolding into large scale works that resonate with both their surroundings and the time-transcending essence of movement and light.
